Suitable connections and couplings for your swimming pool (pump): everything you need to know

Connecting a pool pump or additional equipment like a heat pump can sometimes be a challenge. If you already have a complete connection set, the sizes usually fit together well. But what if you add a more powerful pump later or want to expand your pool system? It might be that the connections don't immediately match. No worries! In this guide, we explain step-by-step which types of connections exist and how you can easily connect them to one another.

The most common connections

You will encounter various types of connections in swimming pools, depending on the pump and other accessories. The most common sizes and systems are:

✔ 32mm or 38mm clamp connection – The most common connections for above-ground pools, easily secured with a hose clamp.
✔ 38mm screw connection – A more robust connection that sits tighter and has less risk of leakage.
✔ 50mm glue connection – Used for larger pools and powerful pumps. The connection is permanently glued here.

Do you want to combine different types of connections? Special adapters and couplings are available to connect everything together properly.

How to couple different connections

💡 From a 32mm clamp connection to a 38mm screw connection
Use Adapter A to connect a 32mm hose to a 38mm screw connection. Secure the hose with two hose clamps for a leak-free connection.

💡 From a 32mm clamp connection to a 38mm clamp connection
Place Adapter B on the nozzle of the 32mm connection. Then use Adapter A on the screw side and slide the 38mm hose over it. Secure it with hose clamps.

💡 From a 32mm clamp connection to a 50mm glue connection
Use a special 38/32 coupling with a 50mm glue connection. Apply PVC glue to the thickened part of the coupling, place it into the 50mm glue connection, and secure the hose with a hose clamp.

💡 From a 38mm screw connection to a 50mm glue connection
Place Adapter A on the 38mm screw connection, connect it with a 38mm hose, and attach the assembly to the 50mm glue connection with a hose clamp and PVC glue.

Handy tips for a watertight connection

🔹 Is your clamp connection leaking? Tighten the hose clamp a little more. If that doesn't work, loosen it slightly to allow the hose to shape itself better for a tighter fit.
🔹 Choose a screw connection where possible – This is usually more watertight and sturdier than a clamp connection.
🔹 Check rubber sealing rings on screw connections – A shifted or missing ring can cause leakage. If necessary, use Teflon tape for an even better seal.
🔹 For glue connections: use PVC Cleaner to make the surface clean, dry, and grease-free before applying the glue. Let the glue joint dry for at least 24 hours before putting the pump into use.

Conclusion: easily adapt your pool system

Whether you are connecting a new pump, adding a heat pump, or just want to couple existing parts: with the right adapters and proper preparation, it is a piece of cake. Ensure you choose the correct connection size and always use high-quality hose clamps and sealing materials for a leak-free result.
